CIES recognizes that one of the most important steps to be taken in reducing the achievement gap in our schools is to provide educators with professional development opportunities and resources. The workshops, seminars and training sessions we organize provide an opportunity for educators to study with Cornell faculty, utilize the campus resources, reflect upon teaching strategies, network with other teachers and gain new curricula materials. Topics for professional development are needs-driven,so if you have an idea in mind for a workshop, ask us, we'd be happy to work with you to put something together.
In the past we have organized workshops for social studies teachers and foreign language teachers which focus on a particular topic of interest such as adapting language pedagogy to incorporate IT developments, using music in foreign language classes, understanding Islam in Europe, and the changing face of Germany. We are also very happy to work with school districts to provide material for in-service days.
International Summer Institutes are held annually in collaboration with our CERIS area program partners and in the past have covered themed topics such as teaching world culture through art; global contemporary adolescent literature; religious pluralism; world wars I and II; international water rights. Information for the ISSI for 2012, Water: Symbolism and Sustainability, as well as previous ISSIs and resources related to them is available on the CERIS website:http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/outreach_professional_development
